The New Officers of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Flotilla will be installed on October 6, 2011 at 10:30. Captain Paul Stewart has been captain of flotilla for the last four years and will pass the gavel to new Captain Jay Howard.
“The most memorable times, good and bad, as being captain would have to have been when we were searching for the children were thrown from the bridge,” said Captain Stewart. “ It was horrible to think that someone could do such an act.” “The good thing that happened during the search for the children was that we rescued two duck hunters the day before we found the last child.” Captain Stewart said both hunters were 17 years old and one was found floating in the water and the other was found on top of a houseboat unconscious and suffering from hyperthermia. Both young men survived. “That was a very rewarding experience during a very difficult time.”
Sheriff’s Flotilla Volunteers freely give of their time and talents to serve the community in times of accident and disaster. In fact, they actually pay annual dues to be a part of what is considered to be the finest search-and-rescue unit on the Gulf Coast. Demands for its services increase each year and continuous training is a top priority.
