NEW PISTOL PERMIT INFORMATION DUE TO COVID-19

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Pistol Permit Section is currently servicing new permit applications and renewals.  The procedures for handling these transactions is listed below.

 

1.       RENEWAL

 

a.       Mail in – The customer mails the Sheriff’s Office their renewal card and payment. We run a background check and mail the customer their new permit.

 

b.       Online – The customer completes their renewal and payment through the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office website. We run a background check and mail the customer their new permit.

 

c.       Walk in – The customer comes to the front desk and fills out a renewal card.  They leave that card, along with payment at the civil window. We run a background check and mail the customer their new permit.

 

2.       NEW APPLICATION

 

a.       Online – The customer completes the application online. We process the application, run a background check and, if the customer qualifies for a permit, we call them and instruct them to bring payment to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. When they arrive, we issue them a permit.

 

b.       Walk in – The customer comes to the front desk and fills out a permit application and leaves it at the civil window.  We process the application, run a background check and, if the customer qualifies for a permit, we call them and instruct them to bring payment to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. When they arrive, we issue them a permit.

 

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Pistol Permit Section had over 150 new online applications between March 17, 2020 and March 20, 2020.  This influx has made it necessary to prioritize application processing.  We are processing renewals and walk in applications first and then processing new online applications as time permits.

NEW PISTOL PERMIT APPLICATIONS:

Please read the “Pistol Permit General Guidelines” before you choose to move forward in the application process.  All applications must be received in person, and you must have valid identification with you when you bring your application to the Sheriff’s Office.

*Retired Military (20 years or more)
A pistol permit is available without fee to individuals who are otherwise eligible for a pistol permit and who retired from active duty in the Army, or the Navy, or the Marine Corps, or the Air Force, or the Coast Guard of the United States or any reserve or National Guard component thereof. – Online Applications are not available for this option. You must apply at the Sheriff’s Office.

By mail or in person:
Pistol permit photos shall be retaken in person every five years. For renewals by mail, please allow a few weeks for delivery. Renewal requests should include your current pistol permit number, any changes of address and/or phone numbers; and a money order, cashier’s check or personal check made out to the Sheriff’s Fund. MCSO also accepts Discover, Visa or MasterCard. The cost to renew is $20 per year up to five years. If you need additional information or have questions, please call 251-574-8694.
