If you would like to become involved in the great work going on
at the Mobile County Sheriff's Office then you may be interested in signing up
to become a member of the Sheriff's Volunteer Corp. This would be a great
opportunity for you to be a part of a full service law enforcement agency. You
may be interested in one of the many exciting areas of the department:
Mounted Unit - Our Mounted Deputies go through intense
training on how to effectively patrol on horseback and to conduct special
operations such as search and rescue missions and crowd control activities.
Each year teams of horses are deployed to the downtown streets of Mobile to
help keep an eye on crowds approaching 200,000 during Mardi Gras. The
volunteer-based group can have special assignments and call-outs that range
from searching for missing persons, crowd control and security for the Sheriff
at special events.
Sheriff's Posse - Another very important Mounted Unit,
the Posse is a historic unit whose responsibilities have varied throughout
time. Today the Posse serves as the Sheriff's ceremonial horseback unit.
Members of the Posse stand ready to assist the Sheriff's Office at anytime.
Sheriff's Surgeons - When members of the MCSO are
deployed into dangerous tactical situations - they are supported by the
Sheriff's Surgeons. Doctors who are on-call to respond to situations when
deputies are at most risk. Since its inception this special unit has cared for
deputies in a number of situations including those shot in the line of duty.
Flotilla Unit - Because of the abundance of waterways in
the Mobile area, the Sheriff's Flotilla is one of the most important arms of
the agency. Each year members of the flotilla conduct numerous water search and
rescue missions around Mobile County. Using hovercraft, jet skis, power boats,
and air boats the Flotilla stands ready to answer distress calls day or night.
C.A.G. Member - A highly effective tool in the fight
against crime in communities is the establishment of a CAG or County Action
Group. These groups, made up of motivated and concerned citizens, meet
regularly with department officials to address problems in their back yards.
Statistics have proven that when these groups are established crime is reduced
significantly.
V-Corp - The Sheriff's Office is faced daily with various
situations that require the use of special tools and skills. It is for this
reason that we have started recruiting members of the community that may offer
a special skill to be used by members of the agency at any time. V-Corps
members will gain insights into our local law enforcement system and have the
opportunity to improve the quality of their local law enforcement through the
service of their work, their ideas and special skills or training. V-Corps was
created to allow the citizens of Mobile County the opportunity to participate
in making their community safer and stronger for their homes and their
families. The Sheriff's Office is currently in need of linguists, computer and
software engineers, accountants and paramedics. Persons interested sign-up by
completing an application so that a background check can be conducted. Once the
application process has been completed you will meet with department officials
to determine how your skills can be used throughout the department. If you feel
that you have a special skill or training that may be useful please call the
V-Corp coordinator to sign-up today.
TEAM SHERIFF - The Sheriff's Office is seeking walkers
runners and joggers interested in fitness, wellness and fellowship. Team
Sheriff members can be full time employees, sworn and non-sworn, volunteers,
family members and citizens interested in walking and/or running in local
races. Additionally, we will be competing against other corporate teams during
the year. Want to get involved? Contact Sergeant Jerry Taylor at 574-4780 or
Kate Johnson at 574-6397
