Mobile County Sheriff's Office Mounted Unit
The Sheriff’s Office Mounted Unit consists of 29 dedicated members. The volunteer-based group put in over 1,500 hours of training last year; the unit racked up twice as many hours working special assignments and call-outs. Typical patrol assignments range from search and rescue for missing persons, crowd control at Mardi Gras parades or security at events such as Bayfest, the GMAC Bowl and high school football games.
Mounted units are critical not only because the horse’s size can create an intimidating presence, but because mounted units can tread in areas that patrol units oftentimes cannot.
Each member owns and maintains their horse and trailer at their individual residence, is required to attend a minimum of two trainings a month and participate in various work activities during the week, depending on the season.
